How to apply for Admission (M.S. or Ph.D.)

To apply for admission, you need to submit a set of items to the Graduate School and another set to the Department. Please check out the options given below:


 

Items to be submitted to the Graduate School

  1. Completed "Graduate Application for Admission".

    Apply online (Graduate Admissions Page - full application information)

  2. A $35 non-refundable application fee in the form of a personal check, cashier's check, money order or bank draft payable to the University of Tennessee. The fee must accompany the application. If completing the online application, the application fee must be paid online using a credit card.

  3. One official transcript from ALL colleges and universities attended.

  4. Official scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), General Test.

    Food Science and Technology requirements are: minimum Verbal + Quantitative score of 1000 with minimum Verbal score of 400; minimum Analytical Writing score of 4.0.

  5. Official scores from the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)* if native language is not English.
    Minimum acceptable scores:
    • iBT (internet-based test) - 80 (with a minimum score of 20 in each sub-section)
    • Computer-based test - 213
    • Paper-based test - 550



      * the IELTS may be used in place of the TOEFL - minimum score is 6.5

  1. Three letters of reference or completed rating forms.
  2. In two pages or less (attach separate pages), describe your goals and reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in Food Science and Technology. 
  3. There is NO separate application for departmental assistantships.
